Becoming a Preceptor

Committed Preceptor Requirements

  • Must be available to precept a minimum of one nurse practitioner student per year for 120 hours or more
  • Be nationally certified as an advanced practice nursing or physician assistant or board eligible/certified physician in an area appropriate to the focus of the student’s area of study
  • Hold current licensure for the practice of medicine, advanced practice nursing, or physician assistant in the State of Illinois or precepting state
  • Possess at least two years of clinical experience following professional education as an advanced practice nurse, physician assistant, or physician
  • Demonstrate a sincere interest in teaching and mentoring graduate nursing students enrolled in the clinical practicum
  • Be able to allocate sufficient time and space resources to effectively fulfill the role
  • Show willingness to collaborate with graduate nursing faculty and graduate nursing students in planning and evaluating clinical practicum experiences

Prior to Precepting

An Affiliation Agreement signed by the clinical site and College of Nursing must be complete

Students who use preceptors cannot select a preceptor who is a family member or any other relationship that could create an actual or perceived conflict of interest.
