Biography

Dr. Hubbell is a 1995 and 2008 Saint Francis College of Nursing graduate in Peoria, IL, and an alumnus of Illinois State University since 2019. She is a proud first-generation college student! Dr. Hubbell has been a registered nurse since 1995 and in academia since 2009; she enjoys collaborating with students at all academic levels. She has taught in several nursing programs, from licensed practical nursing to doctoral-level nursing. Her background in nursing and passion for physical activity led her to earn certification as a personal trainer and nutritionist. Coming from a population experiencing health disparities and interested in improving health outcomes, Dr. Hubbell cultivated her research focus on long-term physical activity in physically active African American women. She chose a strength-based focus using the socioecological model for her dissertation work. Employing a descriptive, qualitative design and thematic analysis, she explored how physically active African American women successfully navigate competing obligations and external influences to remain physically active. This study resulted in four publications, including one abstract, a presentation recognizing this work at a national nursing conference, and citations in other research venues. Dr. Hubbell's current research focuses on exploring and understanding the lived experiences of African American women and long-term physical activity using mixed methods. Dr. Hubbell is an advocacy researcher working to improve the health outcomes for all African American women by showing that physical activity can be a natural part of their daily lives. Dr. Hubbell's long-term goal is to establish a program of research focused on developing tailored interventions to support long-term physically active lifestyles and improve health outcomes for African American women.
