Lois E. (Hoobler) Philpott Endowed Scholarship

Lois E. (Hoobler) Philpott was born in Gridley, IL on January 23, 1919. She spent most of her life in Bloomington. In 1940, she graduated top of her class from the Mennonite School of Nursing. She worked as a registered nurse for 40 years and volunteered in the Mennonite College of Nursing Alumni Association for another six years. Lois was awarded the College’s highest honor, the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1984.

Lois was the nurse who never failed to show quiet, in-charge leadership whenever the situation required it. No task was beneath her or beyond her. Lois concurrently worked as a nurse at the Gailey Eye Clinic in Bloomington and was a private duty nurse for Dr. Gailey during his final illness.

Lois was a lifelong active member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Bloomington. She enjoyed involvement in many charitable organizations including being a Brownie/Girl Scout and Cub/Boy Scout leader. She could never say no to requests for helping people and organizations, and she was relentlessly active in that regard.

Lois enjoyed caring for people and always took special interest in children. She was the nurses’ nurse, bringing comfort to so many for so long. Lois’ life is characterized by an exemplary dedication to helping and caring. Friends of Lois always sensed a spirit of hope, positive attitude, willingness to get things done, and compassion.
