Health Compliance

All students entering their respective nursing program are expected to be compliant with all health and safety requirements of the University, MCN, and the clinical sites they are assigned to or have selected, at all times. In addition to any University and MCN expectations, students engaged in a clinical for credit are subject to applicable policies and/or procedures of the clinical site, including immunizations and other requests. Upon admission, students receive a comprehensive list of health and safety compliance requirements that must be adhered to prior to nursing course enrollment. These include but are not limited to the following: immunizations, blood titers, TB test, influenza vaccination, N95 mask fit test, criminal background checks, and drug screens. Upon clinical assignment and throughout the semester,  students are provided clinical site-specific requirements beyond those outlined upon admission. If clinical rotations require more than ISU/MCN, (i.e., COVID-19 vaccination proof, weekly testing, etc.), students must meet the requirements of that clinical site by providing documentation, as directed by the clinical site (i.e., directly to the site following their guidelines for compliance and/or through the College with an appropriate release). Students must comply with these requirements to receive a registration permit or remain registered for clinical. More details related to health and safety can be found in the Health and Safety section of the Student Handbook. Students should refer to their Health and Safety checklists to be aware of requirements and deadlines.

For students preparing to apply to this program, we strongly encourage you to get the following titers drawn within 12 months of starting the program.  In case you do not demonstrate immunity, you can complete the required follow-up vaccination series to meet compliance requirements for your first clinical course semester. Please pay special attention to the three immunizations noted below. If follow-up immunization is necessary due to lack of immunity, they take several months to complete.

  • Hepatitis B – medical documentation showing evidence of a 3-dose Hepatitis B vaccination followed by a positive titer (indicating immunity). If follow up vaccination series is required because you do not show immunity, you must complete a 2-dose Heplisav-B series followed by a 2nd titer.
  • Measles, Mumps, Rubella - medical documentation showing evidence of a 2-dose MMR vaccination followed by a positive titer for Rubella, indicating immunity.
  • Varicella – medical documentation showing evidence of immunity to Varicella. If not immune, must complete a follow-up 2-dose vaccination.

Students not compliant with health requirements are not permitted to participate in clinical and therefore will not be able to begin the Nursing program. If you have any questions, please contact mcninfo@IllinoisState.edu.
