Champions of Nursing Excellence (Champions)
About
Once a month, members gather together to discuss issues related to men in the nursing profession. Together, we:
- explore the history of men in nursing;
- discuss clinical and social issues men encounter as a historically underrepresented group in the profession; and
- network with authors and alumni.
In the 1970s, only about 1 in 50 nurses were men. As of 2019, men make up about 12% of registered nurses (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). Despite this growth, as a historically underrepresented group in nursing, men often face stigma surrounding their profession.
Part of improving the field of nursing means challenging this age-old stigma. When nursing is associated with being a profession only for women, it devalues the work of all nurses. Nurses of all genders add meaningful contributions to the field and are vital to our health care industry.
This group is about becoming the best nurses we can be for our patients by giving nursing students a space to find community, dissolve stigma in the field of nursing, and network with other nurses.
Who can join?
Anyone! This group is open to all nursing students.
